The Perfect Name April 9, 2009

I’ve spent a great deal of time during the past 24 hours trying to think of the “perfect” name for my team. The task of finding that punchy word (or combination of words) that encapsulates our group chemistry and mission, oozes with creativity, and has a memorable “ring” to it has not been easy. My team can attest to the fact that I’ve become somewhat obsessed with this task, sending multiple e-mails with a variety of potential names, ranging from the fairly traditional — Team Endeavor, Team Torque, Team Pinnacle — to more clever plays on words — Senergy (Synergy + Energy), GOALd (Goal + Gold), Würk, and the list continues…

All of this brainstorming got me thinking about how successful companies go about selecting their names. After some research, I came across this article, which outlines a structured creative process that can help generate “wow-factor” company names: http://thinkvitamin.com/business/how-to-name-your-company/.

I’d be curious to hear how other teams ended up determining their names and what people think of the techniques suggested in this article. Am I overestimating the power of a quality team (or company) name, or do you think it’s worth it to make a very concerted effort to come up with that special name that pops?
