Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid used professional market research surveys from different countries to create their series of the world’s Most Wanted & Least Wanted paintings. Their intention was to discover a true “people’s art” but I think most of the works look like junk. Nonetheless, I think it’s really interesting to see how the works vary from nation to nation. It’s also interesting to note that perhaps the opinion polls that inundate us these days may leave us with results that reflect the clumped opinions of the aggregate but in reality apply or appeal to markedly few people.
