Dove’s “Campaign for Real Beauty” – Creative or Hypocritical? May 4, 2009

I came across a short commercial (entitled “Onslaught”) produced by Dove a few years ago as part of their “Campaign for Real Beauty.” In the commercial, Dove juxtaposes several advertisements to demonstrate how the beauty/fashion industry has created unrealistic and dangerous expectations for women with respect to beauty and appearance. While I definitely applaud Dove’s efforts, I find it slightly ironic that they are the group that produced “Onslaught” since they are part of the beauty industry and the video is still technically an advertisement. Do you think this advertisement is creative and innovative in its approach to selling a beauty products brand or just hypocritical? Here’s another video (“Evolution”) from the same “Campaign for Real Beauty”
