House of Cards Thoughts May 12, 2009

First, I have to say I was simply blown away at how much Thursday’s class paralleled the real world. With the rules changing, the competition, the secrecy, trust issues, intellectual property, and strategy. Overall, I thought the class was great and a lot of fun.

I think the most important lesson that I walked away with was regarding framing and barriers. In industry, it’s easy to say that ¬†there is a limit to everything, or that you can only do so much… Many times, people attribute these limits to budget, time, or industry standards. But in actuality, I think many of these limits are determined by yourself and how you frame the situation. It’s amazing to see what kind of assumptions people make and how everyone interprets the “rules” differently. I think this is one of the most important factors in how companies differentiate themselves from each other.
